The Communication Awareness Framework
Communication Awareness is the awareness of ourselves, others and context when we communicate.
Communication Awareness is a framework developed by Blessing Platinum-Williams, Founder of Tonely, to explore how aware we are of ourselves, other people and context when we communicate. It starts with a simple idea: communication is about more than the words we use. Our intentions matter, but so do our emotions, our relationships, the context of a conversation, power dynamics, the way we choose to communicate and the experiences the other person brings to the interaction.
The 10 Dimensions Of Communication Awareness
- Self-awareness — recognising your own communication patterns, tendencies and reactions.
- Recipient awareness — considering the person receiving your communication, rather than thinking only about what you want to say.
- Context awareness — recognising that the same words can carry different meanings depending on the situation, relationship and environment in which they're communicated.
- Emotional regulation — recognising how emotions such as anger, embarrassment, excitement, fear or defensiveness may influence how we communicate.
- Intent and impact awareness — understanding that what we intended to communicate and what another person experienced are related, but aren't necessarily the same.
- Reflectiveness — our willingness and ability to pause, reconsider and reflect on communication rather than always responding instinctively.
- Repair awareness — recognising when communication hasn't gone as intended and being able to consider what happens next.
- Power awareness — understanding how hierarchy, authority, status and other power differences can affect how communication is delivered, interpreted and responded to.
- Digital awareness — recognising how communication changes when it takes place through digital channels, and how the absence or transformation of contextual cues can affect interpretation.
- Blind-spot recognition — recognising that there may be things about our own communication that we cannot easily see ourselves.
The 8 Communicator Types
As part of the framework, Tonely's Communication Awareness Test identifies eight communicator types. None is inherently good or bad — each has a genuine strength and a genuine blind spot.
- The Reflector — “Think, then communicate.”
- The Sincere — “But that's not what I meant.”
- The Straight Shooter — “Say what needs to be said.”
- The Feeler — “Communicate while you're feeling it.”
- The Peacekeeper — “Keep things pleasant.”
- The Chameleon — “Read the room.”
- The Quick Draw — “Deal with it now.”
- The Unfiltered — “Communication shouldn't be this complicated.”
